Understanding what needs to be considered when working with a collaborative robot in the welding area.

Collaborative Robot Safety

When working with collaborative robots (cobots), safety is paramount, even though they are designed for human interaction.

  • Avoiding Entrapment and Impact Hazards
Special attention should be paid to areas around the cobot to avoid risks of entrapment or impact, especially if the cobot uses tools like torches or other potentially hazardous equipment.

  • Robot Range Limit Settings
Define and set clear robot range limits to ensure the cobot operates only within a designated, safe area. These settings prevent the robot from inadvertently moving into potentially unsafe zones.

  • Power and Force Limit (PFL) Configuration
Configuring the Power and Force Limit (PFL) is crucial to prevent excessive force during contact. Set appropriate force and speed limits so that any accidental contact minimizes the risk of injury.

  • Regular Safety Checks
Regularly review and adjust these settings based on the task requirements and after any modifications to ensure they remain effective in reducing risks.

Welding Safety Guidelines

  • Personal Protective Equipment
Make sure you wear adequate PPE. Such as welding jacket, gloves, and face shield.

  • Ventilation and Fume Extraction
Use an extraction system and ensure proper ventilation to remove harmful fumes.

  • Fire Protection
Keep fire extinguishers nearby, remove flammable materials, and use fire-resistant mats.

  • Training and Hazard Awareness
Regular safety training and warning signs in the work area are essential.

  • Equipment Check
Regularly inspect welding equipment and electrical connections for defects.

  • Eye Protection
Ensure you and others are protected from welding light and sparks.

  • First Aid
Have a well-stocked first aid kit available and provide training on treating burn injuries.
